#MFRW Book Hooks Wednesday: To Save a Lady: Bonnard's Invitation

Welcome to my post for MFRW Book Hooks Wednesday. This snippet is from my newest historical romance, To Save a Lady, set during the Battle of New Orleans.


This snippet features Captain Jesse Cross (the hero) and his cousin, Lt. Bonnard Reid. Bonnard is trying to convince Jesse, who is enamored with a mysterious masked spy, to go with him to a whorehouse.

       “What about tonight? A couple of Miss Joy’s girls have no teeth and bottomless throats.”

“I already have plans.”

“And they, no doubt, involve a masked woman.” Bonnard reached for the doorknob. “Your desperation amazes me, Captain.”

Hours later, when Jesse braved the wet, winter evening, he knew Bonnard was right. Only a desperate man would be out tonight, rushing to meet with a woman whose face he’d never seen.

To Save a Lady is a romantic novel about courage, loyalty, and what you're willing to sacrifice for those you love. It takes place when New Orleans is threatened by war in December 1814, and the stakes are high. Captain Jesse Cross has some doubts about his survival, as the outnumbered American army will face great odds in battle. But his greatest battle is one of the heart when he falls for a French girl who is cloaked in mystery. In a desperate attempt to save her mistress, lady's maid Elise Plaisance becomes involved in a dangerous masquerade, and she stands to lose everything if she doesn't succeed. Yet, how can she prevail when the man she loves is determined to stop her? (She does have a tendency to pig out on pralines when she's nervous. Just so you know there are lighter moments.)
