I guess you could call me a tree hugger. I'm big on recycling and reusing and recreating new from old because we are "throwing away" too much stuff that will never disintegrate. Think of all the analog TVs and monitors just for starters. I do want to point out that at our Lowe's store and probably at the one in your area, there is a recycle bin for fluorescent light bulbs and batteries, which helps keep them out of landfills.
Also, another feature of recycling and recreating is saving money. I shop clearance sales and thrift shops regularly. This year I wanted a flower arrangement in fall colors. I did actually go to Hobby Lobby first, thinking I'd buy a new one. They didn't have anything I liked and I wasn't up for paying thirty bucks for a little vase with three mums. So I went to Kirklands. Same story. So I was sitting in the parking lot, thinking if I could find a suitable arrangement in a thrift store, I could change out the flowers, which is very easy to do, and I'd have an arrangement at a fraction of the cost.
I drove over to the thrift store and lucked up. I found a nice floral arrangement in a great-looking green vase. It was $4.99 and when I checked out, I got it for 30% off. So it ran about $3.50. Then I went to Walmart and bought gold, brown and dark orange flowers to replace the pink and purple flowers. I think I spent about $8 there. I started to work on the arrangement, taking the pink and purple blooms off their stems and replacing them with the fall colored blooms Plus I added a few extra flowers.
If you ever try this or just arranging from scratch, you will need wire snippers, florist wire, and stakes on hand. The wire snippers are a must-have. And a glue gun is another good tool.
After playing around for a while with the flowers, I finally decided on a look I liked. I boxed up all the pink and purple blooms. I'll either use them in another project or pass them on.
