#MondayMovie Review: Hostiles

I had reservations about watching this movie as I thought it might be filled with explicit violence. I don't mind violence in movies but I hate the "close up" kind like graphic depictions of a character getting half their head shot off. Needless to say, this movie doesn't have anything too graphic other than one scalping which is quick.

Hostiles is a quiet and understated Western. It involves an Army captain who has to escort a dying chief to his burial ground. Basically, the story is about hate of different races who have wronged each other and how they come together on a perilous journey. It's not your typical Western where everything is black or white. This drama is filled with gray for all the characters. There is plenty of action without it being too much and a hint of romance. Also, the actions and dialogue of the characters, especially the captain, seemed very rooted in the historical period. Christian Bale did a terrific job. Best of all, the ending of this movie has a positive twist. Or I thought so, as I was like "Yes!" during the last couple of frames. Rating: 5 Stars
